What Information Matters in a UT Report?

An ultrasonic testing report is more than the word “acceptable”. It is necessary to check which standard and acceptance class the report was prepared to, and under what conditions.

Published: Move Metal

Ultrasonic testing (UT) is the non-destructive examination of a material for discontinuities such as voids, inclusions and cracks. The value of a UT report depends on the conditions and criteria under which it was prepared.

Main information a report should contain

  • Applied standard: For example EN 10228-3 for steel forgings, AMS 2631 for titanium bar, or the specification stated in the order.
  • Acceptance class / quality level: The same standard may contain different acceptance classes; the class requested in the order should appear in the report.
  • Identification of the material examined: Grade, heat number, size and part/batch number.
  • Scope of examination: Volumetric or specific areas; scanning directions.
  • Equipment and calibration: Probe type and frequency, calibration/reference method.
  • Timing of examination: When it was carried out relative to heat treatment and machining stages.
  • Results and records: Whether any recordable indications were found and, if so, their location and size.
  • Personnel qualification: Certification level of the person who carried out and approved the examination.

Points to watch

  • “UT performed” does not show the criterion used for acceptance; the acceptance class must always be visible.
  • The examination is affected by the surface condition; surface preparation and the stage of examination matter.
  • The report should match the related certificate (MTC) via the heat number.

How should it be stated in an order?

If UT is required, state the standard and the acceptance class together in the request. If there is an application-specific specification, sharing the relevant section makes the evaluation easier.
